TABLE  TENNIS  PREVIEW

The Oldham and District Table Tennis season gets underway this week comprising a total of 236 players, with 54 teams competing in the four divisions,. This is similar to the start of last season, although there are now two teams less.

Glodwick TTC, the current League Champions, have strengthened their squad, with the addition of Mick Moir, whilst maintaining the alegiance of Andrew Rushton, England’s current No 3 ranked player.

BAE A, last seasons runners up, have maintained their same squad so should be thereabouts.

Werneth A have lost Nick Mooney but have gained the services of Gary Skinner.

Hyde YMCA could be this year’s surprise package with the signings of Dave Hamilton and England’s No 3 ranked Junior, Caroline Hallows.

Division 2 appears as strong as ever with relegated Rosehill B looking to regain their Div 1 place. Their main opposition could come from the reformed Unison A team comprising of Dave Cheetham, Les Evans, David Hanson & Paul Whyatt.

First Transport have gained a new Number 1 in the shape of Steve Barber who plays in the Bolton & Bury Leagues and could put them amongst the contenders.

The relegated Hollinwood C should also figure.

It will be interesting to see how the promising Ade Ewenla of the promoted Gilders A fares in this division.

In Division 3 relegated Uppermill B should be looking for a quick return having maintained their same squad of Peter Watson, Keith Moores, Howard Meadham & Vince Hill.

The Failsworth B team of Steve Collins, Richard Hinchliffe, Vince Gaffey and Brian Handley along with the Honeywell B team of Terry Cooper, Allan Marston, Alan Wynn & Barry Fordham should be in contention.

Coldhurst B, with Simon Walsh, Tom Chandler, Murray Corbin & John McLoughlin are hoping for a good season whilst the Unison C team of Glen Jackson, John Mark, Frank Sheldon, Mike O’Gara and new signing from the Bury League, Jimmy Ballard, may cause a few upsets.

In Division 4 it is difficult to look past the Saddleworth CC team, who finished fourth last season and now includes ex First Division player, Ian McLean , all made possible as Saddleworth CC only have the one team, which happens to be in Div 4.

Otherwise, the division appears very competitive with the Deaf Club team of Hitesh Kanji, Prakesh Bhojani , Scott Hall & Ron Tench along with the Unison D team of Dennis Heyes, Tony Hyde, Martin Haigh & Jan Galikowski appearing to be among the favourites.

Werneth E welcome back Phil Coombe and with Darren Mitzi, Brian Micklethwaite, Geoff Aspinall & Peter Lees, could have a big say in the title race.

Werneth F see the long awaited return of Marjorie Riddle to join her son Mark, Peter Aspinall Ashley Murray, Malcolm Pellowe & Olive Ashworth

Youngsters, Paul King, James Collins & Andrew Tarpey from the Failsworth E Team, having competed in the Summer League, will no doubt be keen to display their continued improvement.

We welcome Failsworth F, a new team of youngsters, to the league comprising of Alex Leach, Sean McPhail, Alex Reilly, Tom Lowe & Robert Calow.
