Harry’s Star Turn.

The start of the new season in the Oldham& District Table Tennis League saw some notable results.

In Division 2

Harry Ross, veteran of many world championships, had three excellent wins for Hollinwood E in their 5-5 draw with Failsworth A, for whom Rob Carter replied with two wins.

There were fine 9-1 wins for Unison A and Honeywell B against Pennine and Hollinwood D respectively.

Les Evans’s return to the game couldn’t help Unison B to stave off defeat against Honeywell C for whom Brian Higgins was unbeaten. Peter Dawson, making his debut for Unison after his transfer from Hollinwood, won two sets.

In Division 1

Defending champions Werneth A came up against a Glodwick side  containing England number 4 ranked player Andrew Rushton, who, on the night, showed his outstanding ability with three comfortable wins. The only winner for Werneth A was Darryl Meredith with two wins in an 8-2 defeat.

The outstanding result in division 1 was the 7-3 win for Uppermill A against Honeywell Lane A with three wins for Glen Hewitt and two for Gary Crossley.  Tim Baker replied with two wins for Honeywell.

Hollinwood A defeated their newly promoted C team 7-3 with the help of a Dave Buckley treble.

In Division 3

The closest game in this division was between Coldhurst B and their C team which resulted in a fine 6-4 win for the C team, with two wins each from Malcolm Wills and Neil England. Geoff Hollins was unbeaten for the B team.

Newly promoted Unison B found the step up difficult against a very experienced Honeywell D side for whom Alan Marston was unbeaten, with Peter Buckley and Derek Naylor contributing 2 wins each in the 8-2 win.

Failsworth B and C teams also started well with 9-1 and 8-2 victories against Gilders B and new side Saddleworth St Raphaels respectively.

In Division 4

There were no close results in this division with a number of new players playing competitive table tennis for the first time.

One such club was Rosshill C. Newly entered into the league they played with an excellent attitude and no little ability. I am sure that their results will improve after their 10-0 defeat at the hands of Coldhurst E.

There were also 10-0 wins for Failsworth E, Coldhurst D and Owls B, while Uppermill C and Werneth F registered 9-1 wins.

TABLE  TENNIS  PREVIEW

The Oldham and District Table Tennis season gets underway next week with a full complement of 56 teams competing in the four divisions.  The league is as strong as ever with a total of 236 registered players.

Werneth A, the current League Champions, have maintained their same squad, with BAE A, last seasons runners up, doing likewise.

With Glodwick, Werneth B & Hollinwood A strengthening their teams, it looks like being closer at the top this coming season.

Division 2 appears strong and the most even of the divisions.

Unison A could be the surprise package with the signings of Les Evans & Peter Ashworth, although the Honeywell B & C teams together with the relegated Werneth C team, should all be thereabouts.

Division 3 welcomes new team Saddleworth Raphael’s replacing the Failsworth D team, which dropped out at the last minute.

Favourites in this division would appear to be Werneth D along with relegated Failsworth B, although Honeywell D and Grotton B should run them close.

A welcome addition to Division 4 is the Rosehill C team of youngsters. We just hope their secretary, John Baxendale, passed his recent driving test so that he can also become their ‘coach’.

Failsworth School F introduces another team of youngsters to ‘League competition’.

Coldhurst D & E teams along with Uppermill C and Honeywell F should have decent seasons, although this division always throws up some surprises with ‘new’ and ‘young’ players showing great improvements as the season progresses.

One to watch could be Saddleworth CC after an encouraging first season in the league.

Please note the following Important Changes to Hand Book.

Division 2 – Uppermill B now play on Wednesday.

Division 2 – Unison A now play at Wardle Conservative Club.

Division 3 – Saddleworth Raphael’s (Match night Wednesday), have replaced Failsworth D.

Division 4 Team 1 is now Coldhurst E.

Division 4 Team 5 is now Coldhurst D, with Murray Corbin as secretary.
