In Division 1, NCFPPP, who play out of North Chadderton Bowling & Social Club, staked an early title claim beating rivals Werneth Cricket Club A Team 8-2.The big surprise was that the Oldham Champion Darryl Meredith , who has lost only one game in the last two full seasons, actually lost all his games to Andy Jackson (2), Larry Bainbridge(3) and Howard Leigh (2). Stuart Meredith picked up the two wins for Werneth.

Hyde YMCA beat Rosehill B 7-3 with 3 wins from Brian Baldwin, 2 from Dave Sefton and one from Lionel Royle. Rosehill's team of Jimmy Findlow, Warwick Francis and Bob Moores all won one each with Bob beating Dave.

Hollinwood A beat their B team 6-4 in a keenly fought contest which finished just before midnight. George Jones and Jack Christian were unbeaten for the A team whilst Dave Buckley, Brian Huskinson and Simon Hardwick all beat the unfortunate Gary Hallsworth.

In Division 2 Werneth C had an excellent 8-2 win over the fancied Uppermill team. Paul Wilkinson won his three in straight sets, with Doug Hill and Doreen Schofield winning two each, Doug just losing deuce in the third to Mark Simpson. Honeywell Lane fielded Paul Rowbotham, for the first time in a good few seasons, in the draw against Grotton A. Paul won 2 of his games being unlucky not to win them all as he only just went down 22-24,26-28 to Dave Morris. Terry Cooper and Brian Higgins each won one. Grotton A winners were Tony Prescott (2) Dave Morris (2) and Alf Barker (1).The Grotton B team of Steve Smith (3) Alan Sarsfield (1) and Neil Tomlinson(2) beat Gilders A 7-3. Ray Woods (2) and Martin Nicholls (1) replied for Gilders.

In Division 3, Unison B narrowly beat Werneth D 6-4 in a game where 6 of the 9 singles went to a deciding game. Unison's winners were Steve Wild (2) Dave Wild (2) and Dennis Heyes (1), who were all unable to beat Alan Else although Dennis took him to deuce in the third. Christian Halford won Werneth's other set. Owls A beat Failsworth A 7-3 with maximums from Phillip Hall and Paul Woodward with Dinesh Gorasia adding the one set.

In Division 4, Deaf B lost 8-2 to Unison C despite the best efforts of Stuart Davis who won 2 and narrowly lost his third to Mike O'Gara (3). Jan Galikowski and Peter Rands each won two. The youngsters from Failsworth A drew with Owls B, with wins from Jonathon Hulme (2), Adam Young (2) and Paul Carter (1). Dave Foden (2) Linda Woodward (1) and M Stansfield (1) replied for the Owls. Our president Geoff Aspinall (MBE) picked the match against Coldhurst B to make a rare appearance for Werneth E. In a keen but very friendly atmosphere the 'experienced' team of Phil Coombe (3), Brian Micklethwaite (3) and Geoff (2) triumphed 9-1. Mark Tattersall beat Geoff, who fortunately does not hold grudges.

Newspaper Article W/c 16th September 02

There were quite a few interesting results in the first week of the Oldham & District Table Tennis League.

In Division 1 promoted Hollinwood C took a point off Werneth A thanks to Bob Johnson beating Peter Morris game 18 in the third.

Amanda Winskill did the same for Werneth B against NCFPP when she beat Tony Reed in two straight. Promoted BAe B had a 6-4 win against Hollinwood B with 3 wins for Kevin Hill and two for Eddie Kalinowski.

In Division 2 the biggest surprise was promoted First Transport's whitewash over Hamer B, with Ken Hayes, Tom Ryan and Brian Hall doing the business.

The other promoted teams, Gilders Tackle and Grotton B did not fare nearly so well both going down 8-2 to Werneth C and Hollinwood D respectively.

In Division 3 Hamer Delph had a good 8-2 win at Unison A with 2 wins each for Derek Naylor and his son Ian, whilst Alan Marston was unbeaten.

New team Gilders Tackle won 7-3 at Failsworth A with wins from Colin Ogden (3), Gerry Lees (2) and Mark Craven (1).

Promoted Uppermill B were unlucky to go down 6-4 at Werneth D. Alan Else (3) beat Howard Meadham (2) game 19 in the third and Dave Renton (2) returning after a few years out overcame Jim Bradbury (1) deuce in the third. Stuart Hanson won Uppermill's other set

.

In Division 4 Werneth F beat Failsworth D 9-1 although the Failsworth juniors were unlucky not to pick up a set or two, losing two games deuce in the third. The closest game saw Malcolm Pellowe beat Paul Carter 21-8, 31-33, 22-20.

Newspaper Article week commencing Mon 2nd September 02.

With 225 players registered on 51 teams from 22 different clubs, the Oldham & District Table Tennis League commences on Monday 9th September 02.

It looks like being a very interesting First Division where NCFPP (ex Royton A) could be closely challenged by Aerospace A with the addition of Barry Elliott, and Werneth A who have added Stuart Meredith to their squads.

Newly promoted Aerospace B and Hollinwood C together with last year's bottom clubs Hanging Gate and Rosehill B could be battling to avoid relegation.

In Division 2 Uppermill A along with Honeywell Lane who have Paul Rowbotham returning after a few years out, seem to be the main contenders although Werneth C, Hyde YMCA , Hollinwood D and the newly promoted First Transport who have strengthened their squad with the addition of Glen Phoenix , could all have a say in what appears to be a very open division.

Division 3 is also a very even division, although Failsworth A with Rob Carter returning after many years out together with Pennine TTC (ex Transport) are fancied with the newly promoted Owls as an outside bet.

Division 4 welcomes Coldhurst D and Failsworth E as two new teams to the league and it will be interesting to watch their progress as the season unfolds. 'Old hands' Werneth E, Unison C and Unison D look likely to be challenging for the honours.

New players are always welcome. Anyone interested should contact

Joe Redikin on 0161 626 1501 or 07980 716 264).
