WERNETH B MARCH ON

The only unbeaten side in Div 1 maintained their record with a 6-4 win over Rosehill B. Phil Myers was unbeaten backed by an Eddie Darlington double with Jimmy Findlow replying likewise.

A full strengh Werneth A won comfortably at Hollinwood A. Daryl Meredith trebled backed by doubles from Ian McClean and Nick Mooney with Jon De Pledge also responding with two in the 8-2 scoreline.

Doubles from Terry Taylor and Geoff Ogden were the platform of the 6-4 win for Hyde YM A at Rosehill A for whom Phil Ashworth and Dave Pegg replied similarly. In Div 2 Hyde YM B inflicted a second defeat of the season on second placed Hollinwood C. Nick Bakewell was unbeaten backed by a Denis Bradshaw double closed the gap in the table to just two points.

Ian Naylor was unbeaten for Honeywell C in the inter –club battle with their B team. He was backed by a Barrie Royle double in the 6-4 win, with Howard Travis replying likewise.

Failsworth A and Grotton A shared the points in a close fought affair. Rob Carter was unbeaten for Failsworth backed by a Phil Moran double with Steve Oliver replying likewise.

Leaders Uppermill A are opening a sizeable gap at the top after sweeping aside Hollinwood D. Glen Hewitt and Gary Crossley trebled backed by a Mark Simpson double in the 9-1 win.

Another win for Pennine sees them nearer their safety target. John Robertson trebled backed by a Glen Chadwick double with Richard Hinchcliffe also posting two for Failsworth B in the 7-3 result.

In Div 3 Unison B are joint leaders after an 8-2 win over Owls A. John Maher and Mike O’ Gara were unbeaten backed by a Dave Atkinson double. A fine performance from Grotton B inflicted the first loss of the season for leaders Werneth D. Steve Smith and Neil Tomlinson posted doubles with Mike Pellowe and Alan Else responding similarly.

The Gilders B trio of Mark Craven, Fred Wood and Tony Robinson all posted doubles in the 7-3 win at Failsworth D for whom Matthew Evans replied likewise.

A Gary Keylock treble backed by a Tom Chandler double helped Coldhurst B to a 6-4 win at Owls A for whom Dave Harthan posted two.

A Keith Moores treble helped Uppermill B to a 6-4 win at Gilders A for whom Colin Ogden notched two.

In Div 4 newcomers Saddleworth CC tasted success for the first time after an emphatic 8-2 win at Coldhurst F. Chris Brazewell and Peter Skuse were both unbeaten for the cricket club.

Leaders Coldhurst D had to pull out all the stops to maintain their unbeaten record following a 6-4 win at Deaf Club. Malcolm Wills and Adrian Waugh posted doubles with the unbeaten stint of Hitesh Kanji in response to no avail.

Jon Kershaw was unbeaten for Honeywell E backed by doubles from Ronnie Holt and Lee Rowbotham in the 8-2 win at Werneth F for whom Ron Tench replied with two. A Murray Corbin treble backed by a Peter Altham double gave Coldhurst E a 7-3 win at Failsworth E for whom Bradley Dawson replied with a double.

 

Oldham Ladies made an excellent start to their inter-league campaign with a 9-1 win over Bolton. Mandy Winskill and Doreen Schofield were unbeaten backed by a Karen Richardson double who makes a welcome return to competitive table tennis.

 

Team Secretaries are urged to return the Individual Registration Forms to John Foster immediately to comply with the ETTA request.

DOUBLE WOE FOR ROSEHILL

Both Rosehill A and B teams found themselves on the wrong end of 10-0 scorelines and as a result are languishing in the relegation zone. Daryl and Stuart Mersdith together with a Nick Mooney maximum for Werneth A accounted for the A team whilst unbeaten stints from Hollinwood A’s George Jones, Jack Christian and Colin Boardman despatched the B team.

OTTC B returned to winning ways after a 7-3 win over Glodwick. Dave Griffith and Andy Kaye were both unbeaten against the talented asian side.

Doug Hill’s fine form for Werneth B continued in the 7-3 win at BAE B. He was unbeaten backed by a Mandy Winskill double with Mick Hill replying likewise.

 

In Div 2 Paul Whyatt trebled for Failsworth B in the 6-4 basement battle with Coldhurst A. He was backed by a Richard Hinchcliffe double with Simon King also notching two.

Hollinwood E recorded their first win of the season over Failsworth A. John Foster and Gary Newton posted doubles with Rob Carter replying likewise in the 6-4 win. Doubles from the Uppermill trio of Gary Grossley, Glen Hewitt and Peter Watson maintained the divisional leadership after a 7-3 win over First Transport for whom Tommy Ryan doubled.

Paul Howarth was in fine form for Unison A in the 5-5 draw with Hyde YM B. His unbeaten stint was backed by a Liaquat Ali double with Nick Bakewell replying likewise.

Div 3 leaders Werneth D were made to work for their 6-4 win over Failsworth D. Mike Pellowe was unbeaten backed by an Alan Else double with improving junior Matthew Evans responding similarly.

Third placed Grotton B maintained their promotion push with an 8-2 win at Coldhurst B. An Alf Barker treble was backed by doubles from Steve Smith and Alan Sarsfield. The Andy Hey treble for Unison C was in vain since doubles from Peter Watson and Keith Moores gave UppermillB a 6-4 win.

Trebles from Adam Rowbotham and Ken Dunkerley backed by a Derek Naylor double for Honeywell D gave them a 9-1 scoreline over Gilders B and maintained second place in the table.

Unbeaten stints from Derek Buckley and Ray Woods supported by a Brian Handley double gave Failsworth C a 9-1 win over Coldhurst C.

Div 4 saw top meet bottom with leaders Coldhurst D overwhelming their F team 10-0. Terry Holland, Malcolm Wills and Adrian Waugh again responsible for the rout. OTTC C closed the gap on second placed Uppermill C after beating them 7-3. Rebekah Griffith was unbeaten backed by a Carl Simpson double with Howard Meadham replying likewise.

Honeywell E posted an 8-2 win over Failsworth E. John Kershaw was unbeaten backed by doubles from Ronnie Holt and Lee Rowbotham with the Alan Nightingale double in response proving to no avail.

A Murray Corbin maximum backed by a Peter Altham double gave Coldhurst E a 7-3 win over Werneth E for whom Dave Renton posted two.

A close fought encounter between Owls B and Deaf Club shared the points 5-5. Hitesh Kanji trebled backed by a Prakesh Bhojani double with Paul Woodward posting a double for Owls.  

 

This week saw the start of the Lancs and Cheshire League fixtures with the Oldham mens A team in action at Blackpool. Nick Mooney was in fine form for the promoted side which resulted in two wins against Mid Cheshire (5-1) and Bury (4-2) and two narrow 4-2 defeats against both Trafford and Liverpool A. George Jones trebled for Oldham B vets in the 6-4 win at Barrow whilst doubles from Joe Redikin and Bob Johnson secured a 5-5 draw for Oldham D vets at Kendal.

HOLLINWOOD REACH HEADY HEIGHTS

 

Hollinwood A have made an excellent start to the new campaign and currently share the Div 1 leadership with both BAE A and OTTC A. The signings of Tim Hatton and Jon De Pledge have improved the mid-table outfit considerably, they were both unbeaten in the 8-2 win over OTTC B.

Daryl Meredith was unbeaten for Werneth A in the 6-4 win at BAE A. He was backed by a Nick Mooney double with Tony Bates replying likewise.

A Dave Hamilton treble was in vain for Honeywell as they were edged 6-4 by Werneth B for whom Phil Myers and Doug Hill posted doubles.

Bottom side Werneth C were again unfortunate losing 6-4 to Hyde YM A for whom Steve Lyons was unbeaten backed by a Mark Danaher double.

A George Jones treble backed by doubles from Dave Cheetham and Colin Boardman gave Hollinwood B their first win over BAE B 8-2.

 

In Div 2 Honeywell C lost ground losing 7-3 to Unison A. Paul Howarth trebled backed by a Liaquat Ali double with Ian Naylor responding likewise.

Honeywell B fared somewhat better after a 6-4 win at First Transport. Tim Baker was unbeaten backed by a Brian Higgins double with Brian Hall replying likewise. Doubles from Pennine’s Glen Chadwick, John Robertson and Adrian Tindale were enough for a 6-4 win over Coldhurst A for whom Simon King replied likewise. Leaders Uppermill A swept aside Failsworth B 9-1. Unbeaten stints from Glen Hewitt and Gary Crossley backed by a Mark Simpson double did the damage although youngster Nathan Buckley registered a very creditable win over the latter.

 

The Div 3 match of the week was the top two clash between the D teams of Honeywell and Werneth. Mike Pellowe and Alan Else were both unbeaten for Werneth in the 7-3 success.

Another match of the week was between former Springhead Youth Club teamates Dave Harthan of Owls A against Steve Smith of Grotton B. Despite the 40 years that have since elapsed, neither player has lost their competitive edge. Dave Harthan triumphing 18-16 in a fourth game decider. His eventual treble was not enough since  doubles from Steve Smith and Neil Tomlinson gave Grotton a 6-4 win.

 

The dominance of Div 4 runaway leaders, Coldhurst D, continued after a 9-1 formality over Owls B. Terry Holland and Malcolm Wills were unbeaten backed by an Adrian Waugh double.

A 9-1 win for Unison D keeps them in second spot. Dennis Heyes and Martin Haigh trebled backed by a Roger Jagger double.

The juniors of Failsworth F are reaping the benefits of the summer league against higher level opposition after an 8-2 win over their E team. Jordan McNamara was again unbeaten backed by doubles from Bradley Dawson and Danny Cooper with Alan Nightingale replying likewise.

A Murray Corbin treble helped Coldhurst E to a 7-3 win over Deaf Club. He was supported by a Peter Altham double with Ian Cochrane replying likewise.

Unbeaten stints from Rebekah Griffith and Carl Simpson for OTTC C keep the pressure on the top two after a 7-3 win at Werneth F.   

                                         

The Oldham inter league seniors season begins next Sunday at Blackpool where the two teams will be looking to consolidate Premier and Div 1 table tennis respectively.
