HAYES RISES TO CHALLENGE

Division 2 player Ken Hayes produced an outstanding performance for Oldham Vets B in their Lancs & Cheshire div 1 clash with Oldham Vets A. Hayes contributed a double with George Jones and Gary Skinner replying likewise in the 5-5 scoreline. Both Vets teams were promoted last season and a miracle will be needed to avoid relegation from the higher level since they occupy the bottom two places.

In Div 1 of the Oldham league Phil Myers was unbeaten for Werneth B, backed by Doug Hill (2) in the 6-4 win over Hollinwood B.

Honeywell A beat Grotton A 7-3.Paul Rowbotham trebled backed by a Tim Baker double.

George Jones was unbeaten for Hollinwood A in a 6-4 win over Hyde YMCA A, which saw a double in reply from the ever- improving Steve Lyons.

In Div 2 the 7-3 win for Werneth C at promotion rivals Hollinwood C underlines they too are not out of contention. Bernard Davies, Doreen Schofield and Paul Wilkinson all posted two with the treble of Phil Holmes to no avail.

Unison A swept aside lowly Pennine 7-3. Frank Sheldon was unbeaten backed by doubles from Paul Howarth and Dave Wild.

Newly promoted Honeywell B consolidated their mid-table standing with an 8-2 success at Grotton B. Brian Higgins was unbeaten with Terry Cooper and Ken Dunkerley posting doubles.

Leaders Rosehill B are easing ahead after an 8-2 win over First Transport. Simon Collins trebled with Jim Findlow and Bob Moores contributing doubles.

Div 3 leaders Coldhurst A hit the 100 point mark for the season with an 8-2 win over Unison C. Simon King was unbeaten backed by doubles from Geoff Hollin and Gary Keylock with Mike O’Gara replying likewise.

The 7-3 win for Gilders A took them into second spot, Colin Ogden was unbeaten supported by a Martin Nicholls double over PBAIS.

A Simon Walsh treble paved the way for Coldhurst B in the 7-3 win over their C team. Tom Chandler chipped in with two with Murray Corbin replying likewise.

A Maurice Tobi treble helped Community Centre share the points with Gilders B in a mid-table encounter. Colin Ogden and Mark Craven replying with doubles.

Div 4 leaders Coldhurst D also reached the 100 point milestone with a 7-3 win at Unison D. Malcolm Willis trebled backed by a Dave England double with John Mark replying likewise.

Honeywell C returned to winning ways with a 9-1 win over Deaf Club, Aaron and Adam Rowbotham being both unbeaten with Lee Rowbotham registering a double.

HALFWAY POINT OF CAMPAIGN

The tables have shaped themselves at the halfway point of the season. Newcomers BAE A registered an emphatic 10-0 win over mid-table Hollinwood A. Ian Mathers, Tony Bates and Tom Lang were all unbeaten.

The treble of Terry Taylor helped Hyde YM A share the points with Werneth B who had Jon De Pledge and Doug Hill replying with doubles.

Kevin Hill and Eddie Kalinowski were unbeaten for BAE B in the 8-2 win over bottom side Grotton A.

In Div 2 it was top against bottom which saw leaders Rosehill B beat Failsworth B 8-2. Jim Findlow and Warwick Francis were both unbeaten. Hollinwood C edged Uppermill 6-4. Brian Huskinson, Phil Holmes and John Flowers all scoring doubles with Gary Crossley replying likewise.

Glen Dowse was unbeaten for Hollinwood D backed by a Stuart Clarke double in the 5-5 draw with Pennine which saw Glen Chadwick also score two.

Div 3 looks to be a three horse race with leaders Coldhurst A beating their C team 8-2. Gary Keylock was unbeaten backed by doubles from Geoff Hollin and Simon King and Wayne Carter replying with two.

Second placed Hamer Delph had Alan Marston and Ian Naylor to thank for unbeaten stints in the 7-3 win at Gilders B.

Gilders A are hot on the heels of the top two with a 7-3 win at Failsworth D. Martin Nicholls trebled backed by doubles from Gerry Lees and Colin Ogden. Paul Woodward and Martin Raines were unbeaten for Owls A in the 8-2 win over Unison B.

In div 4 leaders Coldhurst D enjoyed an emphatic 9-1 win at Failsworth F. Malcolm Willis and Dave England were unbeaten with Neil Chapman chipping in with two.

Another defeat for Honeywell C sees them in danger of slipping out of the promotion picture. An Adam Rowbotham treble was in vain as doubles from Philip Coombe and Dave Renton edged it for Werneth E 6-4.

Failsworth G swept aside bottom team Coldhurst F 10-0. Nathan Buckley, George Mercer and Matthew Evans being the architects of the rout.

Dennis Heyes and Martin Haigh were unbeaten for Unison D in the 8-2 win over Owls B with David Foden replying with his first ‘toss up’ win of the season.

It is encouraging to see that junior table tennis is flourishing within the area once again. Several juniors have represented Failsworth School in the Manchester Schools League which has seen them win all their four matches. The representatives were Adam Rowbotham, Aaron Rowbotham, Jamie Ho, Rebekah Griffith, Matthew Evans and Daniel Cooper.

Rebekah Griffith represented the Lancashire cadets team played at Grantham winning three out of four matches and has also qualified for the National trials to be held at Crystal Palace in April 2005.
