Newspaper Article 31st March 03.

With only 2 weeks of the season remaining there is still everything to play for, as none of the titles are yet decided.

In Division 2, the three-way battle for top honours is still in the mix following last week's results.

Favourites, Werneth C, dropped three points to Hollinwood E. Doreen Schofield won her three for Werneth , just beating Steve Mather deuce in the third.

Honeywell Lane emerged 6-4 victors against 4th placed Hyde YMCA B, for whom Ken Ward was unbeaten.

Grotton A could only manage a draw with bottom club Hamer B for whom Alex Hinchliffe was unbeaten.

Grotton A have two difficult games remaining against Hyde YMCA B and Austerlands, whilst the last match of the season brings together Honeywell and Werneth C in a game which is sure to determine the title.

In Division 3, 'Champions Elect' Pennine beat Lancashire Racquets 7-3, losing the doubles 30-28 in the third.

Unison B moved, temporarily, into second place, by one point, at the expense of Hamer Delph who had a blank fixture and have a game in hand.

In reality Unison B should finish third with Owls A and Unison A fighting for fourth place.

Werneth D moved clear of relegation with an 8-2 win against bottom club Coldhurst A although their last two matches are against Pennine and Hamer Delph.

In Division 4, leaders Unison D whitewashed Failsworth B, whilst Unison D dropped 2 vital points against Failsworth D.

This means that a 6-4 scoreline in favour of the D team, when they meet their C team this week, would be good enough to give them the title.

Third and fourth places are as good as settled, where Werneth E should finish above their F team.

In Division 1, NCFPP are all but assured of the title with Werneth A destined for runners up again.

Third place is between Hamer A and the unpredictable BAe A.

Werneth B battled for a draw against Rosehill B after being 4-0 down. Two wins each for Eddie Darlington and Mandy Winskill did the trick. Simon Collins was unbeaten for Rosehill with Jimmy Findlow and Andy Perry winning one each.

Newspaper Article 24th March 03.

The semi finals of the Divisional Handicap Cups took place last week and the closest game was in Division 4, where the Failsworth E team (Paul Carter, Adam Young and Nathan Buckley), giving a 90 point start to Coldhurst D, fought back steadily throughout the game to lead by 7 points with just the doubles remaining. Coldhurst then won the first game of doubles 21-13, taking a one point lead into the final game, which Failsworth won 21-15 to give them victory by 5 points.

They will now meet Coldhurst C in the final, who beat their B team by 37 points having had a 15 point start.

Division 2 Grotton B ( Steve Smith, Alan Sarsfield and Maurice Tobi ) had a 98 point start against their A team, which was whittled down to 18 points with just the doubles to play. The A team would have still been fancying their chances at this stage but after losing the first game 21-19 it was not to be, and the B team ran out winners by 19 points.

They will now meet Austerlands (Pete Roddy, Gary Keylock and Dennis Hanson) in the final, who beat First Transport.

Division 3. The Coldhurst A team of Geoff Hollin, Murray Corbin and Peter Altham booked their place in the final converting an 18 point start into a 39 point victory against Unison A.

In the other semi final, Uppermill B (Howard Meadham, Stuart Hanson and Gary Kershaw) with a 56 point start held on against Unison B to win by 20 points.

Division 1 Werneth B (Eddie Darlington, Jon DePledge and Mandy Winskill) conceded a 27 point start to Rosehill B and went on to win by 36 points.

They will play the winners of the postponed match between Hyde YMCA A and

Hollinwood C.

With only 3 weeks of the season remaining, teams with fixtures outstanding should now be making arrangements to fulfill them.

 Newspaper Article 10th March 03.

Division 2.In the three horse race for the title, Grotton A have gone top after posting 7-3 wins against Hollinwood D and Gilders A.

Honeywell Lane are in second place 2 points behind, whilst long time leaders Werneth C have slipped to third, 3 points behind but still with a game in hand.

It is very rare for the top of a division to lose to the bottom but this happened to Werneth C recently, losing 6-4 to Austerlands costing them the leadership.

Fourth placed Hyde YMCA B, who are just off the pace, could get themselves into contention and are bound to have a say in the title destination as they have to play the top three in the title run in.

Hollinwood F defied the ranking list to pull of an excellent 6-4 win against their D team.

Division 1. BAe A fielded a strong team against second placed Werneth A and came out 9-1 victors leaving Werneth 15 points behind NCFPPP. Pete Morris was the only winner for Werneth A beating John Hope. Phil Biggs and Mick Moir were unbeaten for BAe A.

The Werneth B team of Eddie Darlington, Mandy Winskill and Doug Hill all won two each in their 6-4 win against BAe B, for whom Kevin Hill was unbeaten.

Rosehill A beat Hyde YMCA A 6-4 despite Geoff Ogden winning his three for the losers.

Division 3.Unison B narrowly avoided their first defeat since October, winning the doubles for a draw against Owls A. In a competitive match where seven of the nine singles needed a deciding game the in form David Wild was the only player to escape defeat.

Oldham & District Table Tennis League Championships 2003

There was an excellent turn out on Sunday at the Oldham Sports Centre for the Tournament sponsored by Deckers Restaurants.

With 65 senior entries plus 17 entries for the Junior (Under 17's) event it proved a huge success for all concerned.

The Open Singles final was a repeat of last years final but the result was reversed with Mick Moir beating defending champion Darryl Meredith in straight games.

Moir had defeated Larry Bainbridge in his semi final whist Meredith had accounted for Mark Ramsbottom .

Larry Bainbridge took the Veterans Title beating Bill Russell in the final after Bill had upset defending champion Mark Ramsbottom in the semi final, winning deuce in the third game. Bainbridge had beaten Tony Hutchinson in his semi final.

It was 'third time lucky' for Ian McLean and Darryl Meredith who took the Doubles Title after being runners up for the past two years. They beat Larry Bainbridge and Howard Leigh, who had dethroned Wayne Renton and Mick Moir, the reigning champions for the past two years, in the semi final. McLean and Meredith had beaten Mark Ramsbottom and Andy Jackson in their semi final.
In the Junior event it was Adam Young who took the title beating Nathan Buckley in the final.

Divisional Handicap events were also held. Results as below:
