HOLDERS PUSHED ALL THE WAY

The Oldham Table Tennis league staged the first rounds of the divisional handicap cup competitions. There were some extremely close scorelines which is indicative of good handicapping. Holders Werneth A conceded a 56pt start to OTTCB running out eventual winners by a mere 2pts. The 53pt contribution from Dave Griffith for OTTC was to no avail since gains from Peter Morris (41), Stuart Meredith (14) and 13 from Ian McClean shaded the outcome.

The very unlikely outcome of a draw was the result between BAE B and Werneth C which will force a replay. The 38pt gain for Mick Hill was cancelled out by minor opposition gains resulting in equal totals of 596pts.

The Tony Bates gain of 56pts was the platform for the BAE A win over Hyde YM A. Tony Vaughan added 26 to result in an overall 28pt victory.

Hollinwood B made no impression on the 72 deficit at Rosehill B losing by an additional 4 pts  The 18pt gain of Jim Findlow ensuring the gap was maintained.

In Div 2 both Hollinwood C and E teams fell at the first hurdle. Steady gains from Phil Holmes (38), Joe Redikin (36) and Bob Johnson (23) were not enough for the C team since they fell short by 25pts to Failsworth A.

The interest for Hollinwood E also ended after a 6pt defeat at the hands of Coldhurst A.

The Richard Hinchcliffe gain of 17pts helped Failsworth B to a slender 7pt win over First Transport.

Div 2 leaders Uppermill A went through by a mere 7pt margin over Grotton A. Gary Crossley contributing a sizeable 63 pt haul for the Uppermill cause.

In Div 3 Owls A and Gilders B saw a 4pt win for Gilders despite a 54 pt gain from Dave Harthan for Owls.

Another incredibly close finish between Werneth D and Unison B resulted in a 2pt win for Werneth. Mike Pellowe gained 18pts for Werneth with the 42pt response from John Maher being in vain.

The huge gains for Derek Buckley and Ray Woods (70 & 54 respectively) were responsible for the one sided 102pt win over Coldhurst B.

The 159 deficit for Honeywell D proved too steep losing by an eventual 21pts to Coldhurst C despite a 57pt contribution from Adam Rowbotham.

The Matthew Evans gain of 16 for Failsworth D shaded their tie at Community Centre resulting in an overall win of 16pts.

In Div 4 Failsworth E had Alan Nightingale to thank (56) and Fred Pickles (21) with Dave Murphy chipping in 19 in a 77pt win over Werneth F.

Gains for John Mark (66) and Martin Haigh (57) were the foundation of the 26pt win for Unison D over Coldhurst F.

Failsworth F also progressed after an 80pt win over Owls B. Danny Cooper (10), Bradley Dawson (7) and Jordan McNamara (26) were the gains for the Failsworth juniors.

The 33 pt haul from Philip Coombe of Werneth E was in vain since a Murray Corbin contribution of 30 shaded proceedings for Coldhurst E by an overall 19pts.
