Article W/c 28th January 02.

This week saw the 1^st Round of the Handicap Cup underway with some very close games resulting.

None closer than in the 1st Division tie at Rosehill B where the visitors Hyde YMCA won by one point. With the game at 20-13 to Hyde in the final set of the doubles the next point was the decider. Had Rosehill won the point they were guaranteed at least a draw and a re-match, however it was not to be and Hyde won the point, the game and hence the match.

The closest finish in the 2^nd Division was at Uppermill where BAe B overturned a 54 point handicap deficit into a narrow 8 point victory.

Werneth C gave Hamer B a 28 point start and went on to win by a margin of 43 points. Ray Hayes did most of the damage amidst calls to 'check his handicap'.

In division 3 Grotton B won by 20 points against Unision B. This was a close game throughout with Unison B setting off with a 12 point start.

In Division 4 Deaf B came away from Coldhurst A with a close 6 point victory.

In Division 1, Werneth B are recovering from a bad start to the season, picking up 4 points at 3^rd placed Hamer. Eddie Darlington and Mandy Winskill each won 2 sets and Karen Richardson went close, going down 22-20 in the 3^rd against John DePledge.

Hanging Gate also picked up 4 good points at BAe. Glenn Hewitt (2) Gary Blackhurst (1) Keith Fendall (1). Mark Ramsbottom (3) and Denis Taylor (2) won the match for BAe.

In Division 2, A Ceramics overcame a stiff challenge from Uppermill. Duncan Hadfield (3), Alan Bamford (1) and Simon Abraham (1) gave them a 6-4 win. Peter Watson and Dave Grundy each won 2 for Uppermill.

An all round team effort gave Grotton A a 6-4 victory at Werneth C with Tony Prescott, Steve Oliver and Alf Barker all winning 2 each. Werneth sets came from Bernard Davies (2) and Paul Wilkinson (1).

Division 3 leaders Transport A unexpectedly went down 7-3 against Lancashire Racquets who fielded their strongest team for the first time this season. Colin Boardman (3),Alexis Atkinson (2) and David Atkinson (1) did the damage.

Deaf A are also showing improved form picking up 4 points at Unison A. Ian Cochrane (1) Hitesh Kanji (2) P Bhojani (1) with Glenn Jackson (2) and Steve Davenport (3) winning the game for Unison.

Division 4 leaders Owls a defeated Coldhurst C 10 -0 although the Coldhurst C team, who are enjoying their first season in the league, showed great endeavour and are noticeably improving with every game.

John Hanson(2), Paul Rands (1) and Dennis Heyes(3) gave Unison C a 6-4 win against Werneth E. Phil Coombe (1) and Tony Hyde (2) replied for Werneth.

Failsworth B lost 8-2 to their C team. Pete Aspin won 2 for the B team but was unable to beat Ron Tench (3). Clive Cheetham and Fred Pickles each won 2 for the C team.

In Division 1Royton A are not having it all their own way this year as they narrowly overcame BAe A 6- 4. Phil Biggs was unbeaten for BAe.

Hollinwoood B fought out a draw against Rosehill A thanks to 3 wins from Jack Christian.

Bottom team Rosehill B came away from Hyde YMCA with a draw. Jim Findlow(1) , Simon Collins(2) and Warwick Francis (1) were unable to defeat Terry Taylor who won his 3 for Hyde.

Division 2 title contenders Hollinwood C were pegged back to a 6-4 win by Hamer B. Alex Hinchliffe again on top form against the fancied teams with 3 all out attacking wins and a share of the doubles.

Hollinwood F team beat their E team 6-4 despite 3 wins from Steve Mather for the E team.

In division 3, leaders Transport A had a close 6-4 win at Unison B. Ken Hayes and Tommy Ryan each had 2 wins with Derek Brooks adding a single. Steve and Dave Wild had 2 wins each for Unison.

Transport B lost 6-4 at home to Unison A for whom Frank Sheldon was unbeaten.

In Division 4, Unison D beat Coldhurst A 6-4, but none of their players were able to beat Geoff Hollin who retains his unbeaten record for the season.

Promotion chasing Werneth E were no match for 'Champions Elect' Owls A going down 8-2 at home. Dave Harthan (3) was outstanding in defence and attack, but he needed to be in order to beat Phil Coombe who won both Werneth's games.
