The Quarter Finals of the Divisional Handicap Cups took place last week in the Oldham & District Table Tennis League with the closest matches both being in Division 2.

Rosehill B can count themselves unlucky having seemingly earned a 472 points each draw against Hollinwood C. It was only afterwards, whilst taking liquid refreshment, that an eagle eyed John Flowers spotted a mathematical error, resulting in a one point win for Hollinwood.

Rosehill B, to their credit, fully accepted the situation with great dignity. The Division 2 leaders had gone for ‘quantity’ by fielding their higher handicap players to give them a 25 point start. It was a tactic that only just failed.

Failsworth C gained a 2 point victory over Pennine, who were 22 points in front with just the final doubles remaining. Rob Carter and Philip Moran turned it around for Failsworth against a disappointed Glen Chadwick & Dave Harris.

Hollinwood C & Failsworth C now face each other in the semis.

Failsworth B started with a 43 point advantage against Hollinwood D and held on to secure a 28 point win. Liaqat Ali was the mainstay of the victory gaining 15 points, with Ian Connell and Jack Greenwood playing their part.

In Division 1 BAe A overcame a 139 point handicap deficit going on to beat Grotton A by 39 points. Tony ‘The Bat’ Bates gained a massive 86 points, ably assisted by Tom Lang (38 pts) and Ian Gerrard (22 pts).

With a 137 point start and steady performances from the Honeywell A team it was enough to see them home against Div 1 leaders NCFPPP by 48 points.

In Division 3,Hamer Delph gave a 25 point start to Werneth D and went on to win by 13 points, mainly due to Ian Naylor, who pulled back 51 points.

The 50 point start for Coldhurst B was enough to give them a 12 point win against Community Centre. Simon Walsh gained 18 points with manageable deficits from Tom Chandler and John McLoughlin seeing them through.

# The final phase of the Mens Lancashire & Cheshire League games took place at Hyndburn this weekend.

Oldham 2nds, whilst being unbeaten on the day, just failed to gain promotion to the First Division, missing out on ‘sets for’. Jon DePledge, Dave Buckley and Ken Hayes all played well in the 3-3 draw against Liverpool and the 4-2 and   6-0 wins against Warrington and Trafford respectively.

Oldham Ladies won 7-3 at Mid Cheshire, with Mandy Winskill and Doreen Schofield being unbeaten. Young Rebekkah Griffith was unlucky not to come away with a win, but it is all good experience for her as she continues to improve.

TOP TWO LOCKED AT 5-5

There was no separating the top two teams in Division 4 of the Oldham & Dist Table Tennis League. Murray Corbin and Malcolm Willis posted doubles for leaders Coldhurst D with a Ray Woods treble in reply for Failsworth E.

Another comprehensive win for third placed Uppermill C sees them close the gap on the top two. Stuart Hanson and Gary Kershaw were unbeaten backed by a Mark Burke double in the 9-1 win at Unison D.

Coldhurst E swept aside Deaf Club 8-2, trebles for Neil England, Neil Chapman and a Mark Wharmby single were the platform of the success.

Werneth E shaded a close- fought 6-4 win at Owls B. Dave Renton was unbeaten backed by a Geoff Aspinall double.

In Division 3 the 7-3 win for Hamer Delph over third placed Gilders A will probably result in an immediate return to the second division. Ian Naylor was unbeaten backed by a Derek Naylor double with Dave Cunniffe replying likewise.

Uppermill B whitewashed Coldhurst C 10-0. Keith Moores, Howard Meadham & Jim Bradbury responsible for the rout.

Owls A won 7-3 at Coldhurst B. Philip Hall trebled backed by a Dave Harthan double.

Unbeaten stints from Craig Oldfield and Andy Hey saw Unison B home 7-3 over Failsworth D.

Maximums from Dave Atkinson and Dave Bleakley saw PBAIS home 7-3 at Gilders B, a result which probably ensures Div 3 table tennis next season.

Promotion from Division 2 looks as if it could go all the way with a single point between second placed Werneth C and third placed Hollinwood C.

Werneth C swept aside First Transport 8-2, Doreen Schofield was unbeaten backed by doubles from Bernard Davies and Paul Wilkinson with Tommy Ryan replying likewise

Hollinwood C demolished bottom side Grotton B. Phil Holmes, John Flowers and Joe Redikin responsible for the 10-0 scoreline.

Youngster Nathan Buckley stepped up a division for Failsworth C and posted a very creditable double, he was backed by a Philip Moran treble with John Robertson replying with a double for Pennine in the drawn match.

Likely Div 1 runners-up BAE A swept aside Rosehill A 9-1. Ian Mathers and Tom Lang were unbeaten backed by a Tony Smith double.

Phil Myers was unbeaten for Werneth B in the 7-3 win over Honeywell A. He was backed by doubles from Jon De Pledge and Mandy Winskill.

Grotton A avoided defeat for the first time this season. Tony Prescott was unbeaten with the Hyde YMCA A duo of Lionel Royle and Adrian Borrell replying with doubles in the 5-5 scoreline.

The ‘Indian Sign’ which Werneth A have over Hollinwood B was again demonstrated with the 10-0 scoreline . Stuart Meredith, Peter Morris and the much- improved Nick Mooney were in a ruthless mood in a match which saw three fifth game deuces go in favour of Werneth.

BAe B and Hollinwood A shared the points, Mick Hill and Eddie Kalinowski posted doubles with George Jpnes and Simon Hardwick replying likewise.

HOLLINWOOD EASE TOWARDS SAFETY

Consecutive wins for Hollinwood B have seen them move towards the comfort zone. A 6-4 win over Failsworth A was due to doubles from Simon Hardwick and Brian Huskinson with Andy Kay’s treble reply to no avail.

Kamal Hussain was again in fine form for Glodwick, he was unbeaten but the Werneth B duo of Phil Myers and Eddie Darlington replied with doubles to edge victory 6-4.

In Div 2 Uppermill A posted a fine 7-3 win at First Transport. Gary Crossley was unbeaten backed by a Mark Simpson double.

Steve Lyons was unbeaten for Hyde YM B in a 6-4 win at bottom side Grotton B. He was backed by a Dennis Bradshaw double with Tony Prescott replying likewise. Pennine posted a vital 7-3 win over Hollinwood E to move them away from the drop zone. Glen Chadwick, John Robertson and Dave Harris all posted doubles with the treble in reply from Jack Christian being in vain.

A much needed win was also provided by Hollinwood D, trebles from both Steve Mather and Glen Dowse were the platform of the 7-3 win at Honeywell B.

There is little change at the top with the top three all winning. Leaders Rosehill B beat a strong Failsworth C side 7-3, Simon Collins (3) & Bob Moores (2) with Rob Carter replying likewise.

The 8-2 win for Werneth C at relegation threatened Failsworth B was due to unbeaten stints from Bernard Davies and Paul Wilkinson backed by a Mandy Winskill double. Third placed Hollinwood C had to work hard to dispose of Unison A. Phil Holmes, John Flowers and Joe Redikin all posted doubles with Paul Howarth replying likewise in the 6-4 scoreline.

In Div 3 Gilders A are pushing the top two after a 7-3 win over Unison B. Dave Cunniffe was unbeaten backed by a Martin Nicholls double.

Leaders Failsworth E took a step nearer Div 3 with a 7-3 win over Owls B. Ray Woods was again unbeaten backed by a Champa Vachji double.

Uppermill C demolished Failsworth F 10-0 to go third in the table. Gary Kershaw, Stuart Hanson and Mark Burke being architects of the rout.
