 Newspaper Article W/c 18th February 02.

Last week was week 20 out of the 26 week season with thoughts of promotion and relegation creeping into play.

Royton A who have been Division 1 Champions for the last 8 seasons are still on track to achieve a ninth title but Werneth A could still deny them. Werneth B, Rosehill B, Hyde YMCA and Hanging Gate are fighting it out at the bottom.

Division 2 is a three horse race with BAe being favourites. The runner up spot is between A Ceramics and Hollinwood C. Werneth D, Honeywell Lane and Hamer B are in the relegation battle although Hollinwood E and F teams could be dragged into it.

Last years relegated teams Transport A and Grotton B are favourites to bounce straight back up from Division 3 although Gilders Tackle and Austerlands are still in with a chance. Deaf A seem doomed and Lancashire Racquets have a lot to do if they are to avoid the drop

Owls A are ‘champions elect ‘ in Division 4 with the runner up spot between Unison C and Uppermill B.

Match Reports.

In Division 1, Royton A beat their B team 8-2. The best game of the night saw Larry Bainbridge defeat Tony Reid 30-28 in the third.

In Division 2 , BAe B beat A ceramics 7-3 , with Kevin and Mick Hill being undefeated Mick’s win against Duncan Hadfield was by way of deuce in the third.

The usual Hollinwood C team beat their E team 9-1. Stewart Clarke beating Joe Redikin in three.

In Division 3 Transport A beat Hamer Delph 10– 0 although there were plenty of close games.

Steve and Dave Wild won two each in Unison B draw against Grotton B. Two wins each for Steve Smith and Alan Sarsfield and one win from Neil Tomlinson gave Grotton the Draw.

David Atkinson of Lancs Racquets beat Ray Woods and Martin Nicholls in their 8-2 defeat by Gilders Tackle. Colin Ogden was unbeaten.

In Division 4 John Mark of Unison C was the difference between the two teams in their 6-4 win against Unison D.

Third team, Austerlands beat Failsworth A 6-4 with the main resistance coming from Munawar Hussain (2). Pete Roddy was unbeaten.

Newspaper Article W/c 4th February 02.

Entries for the Oldham & District Table Tennis League Closed Championships are to be in by 11th February 02. The event, generally regarded as the best tournament locally, will be held at Oldham Sports Centre on Sunday 3rd March 02 from 9 am. The finals are scheduled to start at 7 pm. Spectators are welcome.

In Division 1 this week Rosehill A beat the usual Werneth B team 8-2. Phil Ashworth and Dave Pegg were unbeaten with Neil Coulson adding one singles.

BAe A beat the regular Hollinwood B team 7-3, with Mark Ramsbottom and Bill Russell each winning 3.

John DePledge was the only Hamer A winner against the usual Werneth A team beating Pete Morris in three.

In Division 2, leaders BAe B & A Ceramics had maximum point wins against Werneth D and Hollinwood E respectively. It was a particularly good week for A Ceramics who beat nearest rivals Hollinwood C 7-3 in a re-arranged match.

Hamer B had Alex Hinchliffe (3) to thank for their draw against Werneth C.

Grotton A beat Hollinwood F 7-3 with a maximum from Dave Morris. George Marrow had 2 good wins for Hollinwood.

In Division 3, Transport B fought out a draw with Grotton B in a game which no player escaped defeat.

The usual Unison B team beat their A team 6-4 with 2 wins each for Steve and Dave Wild and one for Ron Holt. Frank Sheldon won 2 for the A team.

Lancashire Racquets went down 7-3 against the regular Austerlands team for whom Pete Roddy was unbeaten.

In Division 4, Uppermill beat Werneth F 9-1. Malcolm Pellowe, avoiding the whitewash by beating Stuart Hanson.

(Although it was not Malcolm Pellowe who won - Mick Pellowe did - Geoff Aspinall is giving his Team DETENTION until they can fill in the match card properly)
