Newspaper Article W/c 16th December 2002

Division 1.BAe B completed the double over Hollinwood B with a repeat of the 6-4 score from the opening match of the season. Kevin Hill was unbeaten with brother Mick scoring a double. Simon Abraham won two for Hollinwood with Dave Buckley and Brian Huskinson each adding one.

Third placed Hamer A disposed of Hanging Gate 8-2 with maximums from Tony Hutchinson & Adge Lowe, Phil Myers adding one, losing to Glenn Hewitt and Gary Blackhurst.

Leaders NCFPP and second placed Werneth A both had 10-0 wins in preparation for their top of the table clash next week.

Division 2. Leaders Werneth C won 9-1 against Gilders Tackle whilst second placed Honeywell overcame Uppermill A 6-4. Paul Rowbotham, whilst winning his three, was pushed to deuce in the third by Pete Watson (1). Terry Cooper (2) and Howard Travis (1) were Honeywell's other winners, whilst Mark Simpson won two for Uppermill.

Third placed First Transport beat Hamer A 8-2 with maximums from Kenny Hayes and Tommy Ryan and a single from Brian Hall who lost to Alex Hinchliffe and Ian Connell.

Division 3. Leaders Pennine had a useful 8-2 win over fourth placed Oldham Deaf Club A with trebles from Glenn Chadwick and Dave Harris whilst Chairman Vin Flanagan won one but lost to Hitesh Kanji and Prakesh Bhojani.

The second placed Hamer Delph team of Alan Marston (3), Derek Naylor (2) and John Kershaw (1) maintained their challenge with a 7-3 victory against Unison A. Glenn Jackson (2) and Craig Oldfield (1) replied for Unison.

Third placed Unison B fought out a draw against Lancashire Racquets, Dave Wild being unbeaten with Steve Wild winning two.

Division 4. Unison C and Unison D are tied on level points following last weeks results where the D team had no problems overcoming Coldhurst B 10-0, but the C team met resistance from Coldhurst C team's Simon King who, winning his three, made the score 7-3 in favour Unison C.

Failsworth's Alan Nightingale had a busy week last week playing for the B, C & E teams (Not sure if he also played for the D team as the card has not yet arrived). Unfortunately his 2 wins for the E team against Coldhurst D will not count due to his ranking making him ineligible. We agree however that for the enjoyment of all players, it is better to turn out three players rather than turn up with a player short.

Newspaper Article W/c 9th December 2002

Division 4. The Coldhurst Club who entered two new teams two years ago are showing much recent improvement under the coaching of Murray Corbin and the organisational skills and dedication of John Greenwood. Whilst this may not be so obvious from the league tables, the underlying trend, which is not always reflected in the match score, is definitely there. The C team who had not won a game out of the first 7 are on an unbeaten 4 game run with Simon King and Simon Walsh showing particular improvement.

It has to be said that all their players are ‘on the up’ and play the game in the right spirit extracting great enjoyment in the process.

Werneth E welcomed back Phil Coombe after his hip operation and his unbeaten performance helped them to upset the Leaders Unison C beating them 6-4. Mick Pellowe stepped up from their F team to win two against the leaders.

Second placed Unison D, is the only unbeaten team in the 4 divisions.

Division 1. Rosehill A, with an all round team performance came away from Hollinwood A with a 7-3 victory. Ian Stott, Neil Coulson and Phil Ashworth all won two whilst George Jones (2) and Bob Johnson (1) replied for Hollinwood.

Hyde YMCA A beat BAe B 6-4 with a treble from Brian Baldwin ,a double from Geoff Ogden and a single from Adrian Borrell. Mck Hill (2) and Peter Hill (1) were BAe’s winners.

Division 2. The top of the table clash between Werneth C and Honeywell Lane ended all square with ‘man of the match’, Honeywell’s Paul Rowbotham, being unbeaten. Brian Higgins and Ken Dunkerley added singles being unable to beat Bernard Davies (2) and Doreen Schofield (2).

The Grotton B team of Alf Barker (2), Maurice Tobi (2) and Alan Sarsfield (1) beat Austerlands 6-4. Pete Roddy was unbeaten for Austerlands with Gary Keylock adding one.

Hyde YMCA B inflicted the first defeat of the season on Grotton A with wins from Ken Ward (3), and Dennis Bradshaw (2) pus the doubles to give them a 6-4 victory.

Division 3.Leaders Pennine with a team of Glen Chadwick,, John Robertson and Dave Harris have posted 7-3 and 8-2 victories against Werneth D and Unison A respectively.

Gilders B came out 6-4 winners, in a tight match at Owls A, winning three of their sets on deuce in the third. Gerry Lees (2) Tony Robinson (2) and a single from Mark Craven plus the doubles gave them the victory. Winners for Owls were Paul Woodward (2) and one each from Philip Hall and Martin Raines.
