Newspaper Article W/c 23rd April 07

The finals of the divisional handicap cups took place last week in the Oldham & District Table Tennis League

In Division 2, in front of a full house at Lees Zion, Failsworth A entertained Honeywell B, but with only a 7 point start it was always going to be difficult. Rob Carter, Paul Carter & Nathan Buckley put in their best efforts and after 7 games were only 8 points behind. The combined gains of Barrie Royle (27), Howard Travis (18) and Ian Naylor (11) saw Honeywell B through by a 59 points margin in a great advert for the game of Table Tennis.

In Division 3 Failsworth made the most of their 42 points start to hang on for a 13 points victory. It was a victory which seemed hardly likely after the first game when Gilders Tackle No 1, Ade Ewenla, pulled back 26 points to reduce the arrears to just 16 points with the experienced Martin Nicholls and Gerry Lees to follow.

To Failsworth’s credit they battled on with spirited performances by Steve Collins, Richard Hinchliffe and young Matthew Evans to take the Cup.

In Division 4 Honeywell G’s 104 point start was just enough against Uppermill C as they held out for a 13 point victory. John Ganley, Peter Ganley & Peter Sharples, all spending their first season in the league, lifted the Cup for Honeywell G. Uppermill’s Jim Bradbury & Ali Mirza pulled back most of the points with Mark Burke picking up his bat for the first time in months to help Uppermill raise a team.

In Division 1 Hyde YMCA A conceded a 76 point start to Hollinwood B and went on to win by 21 points, picking up 83 points in the last 5 games. Steve Lyons, Terry Taylor and Lionel Royle formed the winning team with Dave Cheetham, Colin Boardman & Jack Christian representing Hollinwood in an excellent and sporting match.

Division Two

The climax of the season saw the closest finish in the hunt for promotion, where after 26 matches there was only two points between champions Unison A and third place Grotton A.

Unison A won their last match 9-1 at home to Coldhurst A to clinch the title. Paul Howarth and Liaquat being unbeaten while Peter Ashworth contributed two wins.

Grotton A, needing a 9-1 victory to gain promotion could only manage an 8-2 victory against Hollinwood D. The best efforts of Philip Schofield, Stuart Sykes and Tony Prescott, not quite being enough.

This result means that Werneth C who had already completed their fixtures are promoted.

At the other end of this division Uppermill B have been relegated after just one year in Division Two.

They will be joined by Pennine who finished second bottom.

Division One

Hollinwood C had their relegation confirmed after going down 7-3 to Hyde YMCA A

Rosehill B, who went down to a 6-4 defeat at OTTC A, will join them in the second division.

Werneth A confirmed their position in third place after defeating Hollinwood A 8-2. while Hollinwood B ended the season on a high defeating Uppermill A 8-2.n

Division Three

The surprise result in this division was already relegated Failsworth C holding promoted Unison C to a 5-5 draw.

Gilders B who will join Failsworth C in the fourth division next season also had an excellent 5-5 draw against Unison D.

Division Four

The two promoted sides both had emphatic wins with Coldhurst D beating Failsworth E 10-0 and second placed Uppermill C defeating Honeywell Lane G 9-1. Both these sides can look forward to having a successful season playing at a higher level next season.

One of the highlights of the season has been the increased number of youngsters playing league table tennis at a very good level. This can only enhance the league and help it to grow even stronger.
