The last two Handicap Cup Finals have now taken place in the Oldham & District Table Tennis League.

In Division 4 the Honeywell Lane E team of Aaron & Lee Rowbotham and Michael Ganley set off with a 57 point start against Coldhurst E and ended up winners by the same margin. After 8 games the margin was down to 17 points. Murray Corbin, Peter Altham and Paul Cahill all had small gains for Coldhurst but man of the match Aaron Rowbotham, gaining 75 ponits on the night, ensured victory for Honeywell E.

The Division 3 Final between Failsworth C & D teams resulted in an easy win for the D team of Vin Gaffey , Pete Aspin and Matthew Evans.

The Oldham men’s team were unable to retain the Dennis Smith Trophy, losing 5-2 to a very strong Liverpool team in the final. It was a great effort by Nick Mooney (1) Phil Myers (1) and Eddie Darlington who have represented the Oldham team along with Dave Buckley throughout this competition.

LADIES LIFT CUP

Oldham Ladies table tennis team lifted the Mabel Neary Cup in style after toppling holders Manchester. They were initially 2-0 down only to respond with doubles from Karen Hill, Doreen Schofield and a Mandy Winskill single to give themselves a 5-2 winning margin

The finals of the divisional handicap cups again produced narrow winning margins which is indicative of good handicapping. BAE A lifted the division 1 final by 15 pts. after conceding a 102pt start. Three solid contributions from Tony Bates (39), Tom Lang (30) and Tony Vaughan (42) were the platform of the success.

The Division 2 final went in favour of Coldhurst A by a mere 9 pts. The 21pt gain from Steve Mather for Hollinwood D was to no avail since deficits for the Coldhurst trio of Simon King, Gary Keylock and Simon Walsh were kept to a minimum.

The final week of the league fixtures resolved the outstandiing issues.

The division 3 promotion  race went right to the wire with all three contenders posting wins. Unison B are promoted as champions after a 9-1 win over Coldhurst B. John Maher and Dave Atkinson were unbeaten backed by a Mike O’Gara double. Uppermill B will also be playing division 2 table tennis next season after an 8-2 win over Gilders B. Peter Watson trebled backed by doubles from Keith Moores and Howard Meadham.

Werneth D came tantalisingly close but the 7-3 win over Failsworth C proved not enough. The unbeaten stint of Bernard Davies backed by a Mike Pellowe double compounded the frustrations of the Coppice outfit.

At the other end of the table the Matthew Evans double for Failsworth D at Unison C was in vain since a Dave Hanson treble backed by doubles from Andy Hey and Steve Slater resulted in an 8-2 scoreline and relegation for Failsworth D.

Division 1 champions Werneth A signed off in style with a resounding 9-1 win over OTTC B. Darryl Meredith and Nick Mooney were unbeaten backed by an Ian McLean double.

Relegated Werneth C notched their first win of the season in the final week. The Karen Hill treble was the platform of the 6-4 win over BAE B for whom Mick and Peter Hill posted doubles.

In Division 2 the 8-2 reverse for Coldhurst A at Failsworth A sees them relegated. A fine treble for improving youngster Nathan Buckley was matched by the experienced Rob Carter.

The relegation fears for Hollinwood E were dismissed after a fine 6-4 win over Unison A. Gary Newton was unbeaten backed by a John Foster double with Paul Howarth responding likewise.

In division 4 Mark Lee impressed for Saddleworth CC with a maximum against champions Coldhurst D. Doubles in response from Malcolm Wills and Terry Holland shaded proceedings 6-4.

Unbeaten stints from Alan Wynn and Ron Tench helped Werneth F to a 7-3 win at Failsworth E.

Players are reminded that the Annual Dinner Presentation Evening at the Pennine Way Hotel is on Friday 12th May at 7-30pm when the trophies will be presented by ex international Andrea Holt. Teams are requested to return all forms and monies to Bob Johnson by End April 06.

WERNETH CLINCH TITLE

Maximum returns for Ian McLean, Nick Mooney and Peter Morris helped Werneth A to a 10-0 win at Rosehill B. This result gives the Coppice outfit their first ever Division One title.

The treble from Mick Hill of BAE B was to no avail since doubles from Lionel Royle and Geoff Ogden shaded events 6-4 in favour of Hyde YM A.

Simon Hardwick was in fine form for Hollinwood A in their 6-4 win at Honeywell. His unbeaten stint was challenged by a double from the talented Dave Hamilton. Trebles from Eddie Darlington and Mandy Winskill backed by a Doug Hill double were the platform of the 9-1 win for Werneth B over their C team.

Hollinwood C need one point next week to be certain of promotion to Division One after stuttering to a 5-5 draw against Honeywell B.  Doubles from Phil Holmes and Joe Redikin were matched by Howard Travis and Barrie Royle.

At the other end of the table both Pennine and Hollinwood E enhanced their survival prospects considerably by both posting 7-3 wins. Unbeaten stints for Glen Chadwick and John Robertson aided the Pennine cause against Hollinwood D whilst another Gary Newton treble backed by a Glen Dowse double helped Hollinwood E over Failsworth B.

Division 3 promotion issues will go right to the wire after Unison B became the new leaders after a 7-3 win over Grotton B. Uppermill B were knocked off the top losing 7-3 at promotion rivals Werneth D for whom Mike Pellowe and Alan Else were unbeaten.

This final week’s deciding fixtures sees leaders Unison B host Coldhurst B, Werneth C travel to Failsworth C and Uppermill B play Gilders B which will evolve into a fascinating climax to the season.

It is equally interesting at the bottom as the second relegation place is unresolved. Vince Gaffey, Peter Aspin and Matthew Evans were all unbeaten in the 10-0 rout for Failsworth D against relegated Coldhurst C whilst the Peter Buckley double and the doubles were the only successes in the 7-3 reverse at Gilders B for Community Centre.

This weeks games see Community Centre play Owls A and Failsworth D travel to Unison C.

In division 4 Unison D clinched runners-up spot after inflicting a second successive defeat upon champions Coldhurst D. John Mark was unbeaten with Malcolm Wills and Adrian Waugh responding with doubles.

The all Werneth encounter saw the F team unexpectedly beat the E team. Peter Aspinall trebled backed by doubles from Alan Wynn and Mark Riddle with Darren Mitzi responding likewise.

A Ronnie Holt maximum was backed by doubles from Aaron and Lee Rowbotham for Honeywell E in the 8-2 win over Failsworth F for whom Bradley Dawson notched two.

Oldham Vets were in with a chance of the Premier division title but a 7-3 reverse at the hands of East Lancs has scuppered their aspirations in a game where Nick Mooney posted a double.

A Phil Myers treble helped the Vets A team to a hard fought 6-4 win at Trafford in a result which should have gained promotion to the Premier division only to learn that champions Bolton had conceded their final game 10-0 to promotion rivals Mid Cheshire denying Oldham by just two points.

The Handicap Cup Finals take place at Lees Zion Church Hall as below: Spectators welcome.

UPPERMILL CROWNED CHAMPIONS

Uppermill A confirmed their top flight status for next season after a 9-1 win over relegated Failsworth B in Division 2 of the Oldham Table Tennis League. Glen Hewitt and Gary Crossley were unbeaten backed by a Mark Simpson double. Hollinwood C are almost over the line for runners up slot after 7-3 win over Pennine. A Phil Holmes treble was backed by doubles from John Flowers and Joe Redikin.

At the other end of the table Hollinwood E shaded the crucial relegation battle with Coldhurst A. A Gary Newton maximum was backed by a Peter Dawson double, with Simon King replying likewise in the 6-4 scoreline.

Unbeaten stints for Paul Howarth and Liaquat Ali helped Unison A to an 8-2 win at Honeywell B.

In Division 1 the title charge of Werneth A was maintained after a 9-1 win over BAE B. Ian McLean and Nick Mooney were unbeaten backed by a Peter Morris double. OTTC B had Dave Griffith and Gary Skinner to thank for maximums that resulted in an 8-2 win over Honeywell A.

Trebles from Terry Taylor and Geoff Ogden backed by a Steve Lyons double helped Hyde YM A to a comfortable 9-1 win over third placed Werneth B.

Unbeaten stints from Colin Boardman and George Jones were the platform of the 7-3 win at bottom side Werneth C.

In Division 3 Unison B are just one win from promotion after a 9-1 win over Failsworth D. John Maher and the overworked Liaquat Ali were unbeaten backed by a Mike O’Gara double. Matthew Evans played particularly well for Failsworth but without success.

Derek Buckley and Ray Woods maximums helped Failsworth C to a 7-3 win over Grotton B who included former top junior player from the mid 1970’s Steve Collins. Philip Hall trebled for Owls A backed by a Paul Woodward double with Mark Craven responding similarly in the 6-4 scoreline at Gilders B.

Derek Naylor was unbeaten for Honeywell D backed by an Alan Marston double in the 7-3 win at Coldhurst C for whom Neil England posted two.

Division 4 champions Coldhurst D took their foot off the pedal somewhat in a surprise first defeat of the season. Doubles from Malcolm Wills and Terry Holland were not enough as a Stuart Hanson maximum shaded proceedings 6-4 for Uppermill C.

Unison D are almost promoted after trebles from John Mark and Roger Jagger backed by a Martin Haigh double gave them an 8-2 win over Owls B.

Brian Mickelthwaite and Dave Renton were unbeaten for Werneth E backed by a Darren Mitzi double in the 8-2 win over Failsworth E.

An Alan Wynn treble backed by a Ron Tench double edged proceedings for Werneth F. Prakesh Bhojani replied with a double for Deaf Club in the 6-4 scoreline.

Oldham ladies are into the final of the Mabel Neary Trophy after a 5-2 win over Wirral. Doreen Schofield and Mandy Winskill posted doubles backed by a Karen Smith single.

Wirral must be sick of the sight of Oldham as the Vets won 5-1 there to progress to the semis of the Dennis Smith Trophy. Doubles from Dave Buckley and Bob Johnson backed by an Eddie Darlington single gave them an unassailable five.
