Uppermill C beat Coldhurst F 7-3. The feature of this match was not Jim Bradbury’s maximum, or Gary Kershaw’s double, but it was Bobby Londt’s maiden victory. Well done Bobby, keep persevering.

Maximum wins for both Dave Sefton and Terry Taylor gave Hyde YMCA A a 7-3 win at Rosehill B.

The all Hollinwood battle saw the A team beat the B team by a narrow 6-4 margin. Colin Boardman (3), George Jones (2) and the doubles overcame the B team, where Simon Hardwick (2) showed promise.

Werneth B drew with BAe A for whom Mark Ramsbottom was unbeaten.

In Division 4 Failsworth D who must have the youngest team in the league, put up a brave performance against Coldhurst E. Danny Wilson (13 Yrs) and both 11 year olds Rebecca Griffith and Mathew Evans all contributed well with a singles win each.

The Coldhurst  B team of  Peter Altham, Tom Chandler and Adam Bychiowiec proved far too strong for their F team with a 10-0 maximum.

Failsworth C and Werneth E shared the spoils in a hard fought match. Brian Handley starred for Failsworth with three wins.

The Oldham Summer League was played to a conclusion last week. Played on a handicap basis for the first time, the top of the table took on a familiar look with Hamer A winning the league for fifth consecutive year.

It was a lot closer than previous years due to the handicap system and they are to be congratulated on their success, overcoming massive handicap deficits week after week.

Second place was also close with Hamer B just pipping Hollinwood by 2 points

Most people seem to have enjoyed the new format, which was necessary due to the wide range of player abilities. Feedback would be appreciated from the players so that improvements can be made for next summer.

Amendments to Hand Book

Newspaper Article W/c 1st September 03

With 238 players registered on 55 teams from 23 different clubs, the Oldham & District Table Tennis League commences on Monday 8th September 03.

Drastic changes have taken place in the sport for this new season, which sees the introduction of the 11 up best of 5 games system, in favour of the traditional 21 up best of 3 games. Although the majority of player would have preferred to stay with the 21 up system it is not now an option as the 11 up system has been universally adopted and any reference to 21 up has been removed from the laws of the game.

This is an effort by the Table Tennis Authorities to make the sport more attractive when televised, which, coupled with previous changes to the service rule and the bigger ball, it is hoped will tempt new players, of all ages into the sport.

The duration of a match should now be reduced, as generally fewer points will be played. This will be good for the youngster who have school in the morning and not so bad for the rest of us who can retire to the bar that much earlier. There are always some though who would prefer to battle on until midnight, but you cannot please everybody.

Interesting first week matches in the Division One include BAe A v champions NCFPP who will be looking to avenge last season's rare defeat. Hamer A entertain new team Glodwick TTC and promoted teams Werneth C and Honeywell A clash, in a repeat of last season's deciding final fixture

In Division 2 Grotton A, who just missed out on promotion last year, start their campaign against relegated Hollinwood C.

Promoted teams Hamer Delph and Unison A travel to First Transport and Hamer B respectively.

In Division 3 relegated Gilders Tackle A take on Owls A, whilst promoted Unison C entertain Werneth D with the Unison D team travelling to the Deaf Club.  The Community Centre team are welcomed back after one year out, and are rewarded with a trip to PBAIS.

With four teams from Failsworth , four teams from Coldhurst and two from Werneth, you can almost manage without a fixture list in Division 4 this season.

Coldhurst D meet their F team whilst new team Honeywell C, represented by the 'Rowbothams', Aaron, Adam and Lee travel to Failsworth E. We know what they are like at golf and are about to find out about their table tennis.

New players are always welcome. Anyone interested should contact Joe Redikin on 0161 626 1501 or 07980 716 264).

Newspaper Article 28th April 03.

The League presentation night is on 9th May at the Avant Hotel and team secretaries are reminded to return your booking forms to Bob Johnson immediately for catering purposes.

The League have written to the ETTA informing them that 82% of the players of the Oldham & District Table Tennis League wish to remain '21 up'. This is based on the recent poll in which about 82% of replies were for 21up. Players who have not yet voted,  are urged to do so urgently, in order to complete as full a poll as possible, reflecting our member's wishes. Phone Joe Redikin on 626-1501 to vote.

Newspaper Article 21st April 03.

The finals of the divisional Handicap Cups took place last week.

In Division 1,Werneth B overcome a deficit of 110 points to go on and win by 11 points from Hollinwood C. After the first three sets, Werneth had only pulled back 20 points and seemed to be falling behind the pace, but this was completely turned around in the remaining games and with just the doubles left, the deficit was down to two points. It was a spirited performance from the Werneth team of Eddie Darlington, Jon DePledge and Mandy Winskill, who were always 'up for it' and took full advantage of Hollinwood's (Joe Redikin, John Flowers and Bob Johnson) complacency brought on by their decent start.

The Division 2 Cup was won by the Austerlands team of Pete Roddy, Gary Keylock and Dennis Hanson whose 59 point start was enough against the Grotton B team of Steve Smith, Alan Sarsfield and Maurice Tobi.

In the Division 3 Final, the Coldhurst A team of Geoff Hollin, Murray Corbin and Peter Altham conceded a 3 point start and went on to beat Uppermill team of Howard Meadham, Stuart Hanson and Gary Kershaw by 86 points.

The Division 4 Cup went to the Coldhurst C team of Simon King, John Greenwood and Simon Walsh who won by 72 points after conceding an 18 point start to the youngsters from Failsworth E (Adam Young, Paul Carter and Nathan Buckley).

All honours have now been decided and the Final League Tables will be published once the result of the Second Division game between Uppermill and Grotton B is known. (Being played 22nd April 03)

The League presentation night is on 9th May at the Avant Hotel.

Team secretaries are urged to complete their "11 up Poll Forms" to advise the preference of their players to the league.

Division 2 .Werneth C are champions despite losing their last game 8-2 against Honeywell Lane. This was a vital win for Honeywell who claimed runners up spot with excellent unbeaten performances from Paul Rowbotham and Brian Higgins and a single from Terry Cooper. Bernard Davies and Doreen Schofield won the two singles for Werneth, giving them the title by 3 points.

Grotton A had a good 7-3 win against fourth placed Hyde YMCA B, and could have been excused for thinking it might have been good enough give them runners up spot, especially as rivals Honeywell were playing leaders Werneth C. Unfortunately for Grotton, Honeywell put in the performance of the season to finish ahead of them by just two points.

Austerlands, with a late run, have miraculously escaped relegation. This leaves Grotton B and Gilders A fighting for survival, with Grotton’s last game against Uppermill being crucial.

Hamer B are relegated.

Division 3. The Hamer Delph team of Alan Marston (2) Derek Naylor (2) and John Kershaw (1) beat Werneth D 6-4 to secure runners up spot behind Champions Pennine. Alan Else and Dave Renton won two each for Werneth.

Owls A suffered a costly 6-4 defeat at Gilders B, slipping to fifth just one point behind the Unison A & B teams.

Coldhurst A and Uppermill B are relegated.

Division 4. Fourth placed Werneth F went down 7-3 at home to fifth placed Owls B. Paul Woodward starred for the visitors with 3 wins, whilst Dinesh Gorasia (2) and Mike Stansfield (1) plus the doubles completed the victory. Peter Aspinall (2) and Mark Dyson (1) replied for Werneth.

The Coldhurst B team of Derek Taylor (2) , David Tattersall (2) and John Greenwood (1) emerged 6-4 winners in a closely contested game against Failsworth D. Man of the match was Failsworth ‘s Paul Carter, who was unlucky to finish on the losing side having won his three.

Newspaper Article 7th April 03.

Division 1. Results posted this week mean that NCFPPP are confirmed as champions with Werneth A finishing as runners up.

Hanging Gate's Glenn Hewitt and Richard Sarre had wins against Karen Richardson and Mandy Winskill respectively, in a game which Werneth B went on to win 8-2.

BAe B lost at home to Rosehill A 7-3, with wins for Mick Hill against Phil Ashworth and Eddie Kalinowski against Ian Stott. Dave Pegg was unbeaten for Rosehill.

The BAe A team of Phil Biggs (3), Bill Russell (3) and Dennis Taylor (2) beat Hyde YMCA A 8-2. Terry Taylor was Hyde's only singles winner.

Division 2. Werneth C need just two points from their final game against Honeywell to take the title, whilst Honeywell need to match Grotton A's score in their final game against Hyde YMCA B, to give them runner up spot.

Austerlands took 4 points from Grotton A last week, making the above situation. Steve Bain won his three, but could not repeat his performance against the Grotton B team, losing his 100% record to Steve Smith in a game that ended in a draw.

Division 3. Pennine took the title following their 10-0 win against Werneth D whilst Hamer Delph's 8-2 win against Racquets means that 3 points from their final game against Werneth D will give them second spot.

Owls A, who play Gilders B in their last game, are the only team with a mathematical chance of catching them. Six points from this game would put them in third place, one point ahead of Unison B who have completed their fixtures.

Division 4. The showdown between the Unison C and Unison D teams took place last week and it was the D team who emerged 9-1 victors to take the title, leaving the C team as runners up. The scoreline did not reflect the intensity, tension and drama of the occasion with plenty of close scores and five of the games being decided in the third.

Werneth E secured 3rd place with a 6-4 win against Failsworth B.
